| The Sun And our Skin | ||||
|
Since it has been established that sun
exposure accounts for most of the visible signs of aging, it only makes
sense to stress prevention.
How many of us use a sun block during prolonged or deliberate exposure? The truth is that most of the damage to our skin results from casual, daily exposure. Harmful rays assault our skin while walking from the car to our destination, gardening, sitting in the shade, taking a walk and they even penetrate the car windshield. Unfortunately, most people don't consider this type of casual sun exposure “real exposure.” Sun damage is no longer merely a cosmetic issue; skin cancer has reached serious, epidemic More men than women generally get skin cancers, but women under the age of 40 develop them more frequently than men, possibly because of their sun tanning habits. Men are twice as likely to develop squamous
cell carcinoma on the left side of their faces.

The
Effects of Sun Exposure on the Dermis
Beneath the epidermis lies the nutrient rich dermis. Fifteen to forty times thicker than the epidermis, the dermis is made of vital appendages such as sebaceous glands, hair follicles, nerve tissue, sweat glands, collagen and elastin. During unprotected sun exposure, the sun's UVA rays penetrate directly into the dermis and can damage the collagen and elastin. Eventually the dermis becomes distorted where the collagen and elastin have been depleted. These distortions form deep wrinkles in the skin instead of just the superficial lines or textural changes in the epidermis. To protect the skin from the aging effects of the sun and to prevent skin cancer, physicians insist on the daily use of broad –spectrum sun blocks. The only known way to prevent pbotoaging is to avoid sun exposure. Since that is realistically impossible, it is imperative that you use a broad spectrum sun block on a daily basis.

Effects of Sun Exposure on the Epidermis
Generally, before the age of 25, the dead
cells of the stratum corneum lay in an organized fashion- much like the
shingles on a roof. The skin appears moist, translucent, smooth and finely
textured.

| Long-
Term Effects of Sun Exposure
”Dermatoheleiosis” is the medical term for long-term damage to the skin caused by the sun. Sun damaged skin appears more aged than skin that has been protected against the sun's harsh UVA/UVB rays. Coarse wrinkles due to a collagen and elastin breakdown creates a dry, leathery appearance. Hyper pigmentation is also a frequent side effect of long-term sun exposure. • Change in shape • Change in elevation • The surface of the mole becomes crusty, oozes or bleeds • Mole becomes itchy or painful Individuals at risk of melanoma include those with a family history of malignant melanoma, a fair complexion or a record of numerous sunburns or excessive sun exposure. Even if an individual has had as little as one severe sunburn before the age of 18, she or he is at a higher risk of developing Melanoma. Go Back |
