HYPERPIGMENTATION

Melanin
Melanin is produced by the melanocyte cells, which are located in the basal layer of the epidermis. Production of Melanin, stimulated by ultraviolet rays from the sun, protects the dermal layer of skin from sun damage. As melanin is transferred to the upper layers of the skin, the skin appears brown or tan.  Where there is an uneven distribution of melanin, the skin may hyper pigment, surfacing as brown spots, age spots, freckles, etc.

The Color of Our Skin
Dark complexioned individuals produce melanin more easily, allowing them to tan quickly without burning. Fair complexioned individuals usually have more difficulty producing melanin, often burning or freckling.
The amount of melanin produced and the structure of the melanin, account for the variances in skin pigmentation.
Although pigmentation is genetically controlled, factors like sun tanning, surface irritation and hormonal imbalances can alter the rate of melanin production and change the skin color.

Factors Contributing to Hyperpigmentation
Ultraviolet rays stimulate pigment production, increasing the transfer of melanin to the epidermis and darkening exposed areas.
In the case of melasma, color alteration appears in patches and is believed to result from hormonal changes, which commonly occur during pregnancy or estrogen therapy.
Some uneven increases in pigmentation levels may persist for months and then eventually fade, while others may he permanent. It is impossible to determine which will be the case.

Facial Hyperpigmentation
To date, facial Hyperpigmentation has been treated predominantly with bleaching preparations. The penetration of bleaching creams is slow and difficult, resulting in a long and often frustrating process. Further more bleaching only lightens the top layers of the stratum corneum cells. In most cases, uneven coloration returns and bleaching is a never-ending process.

Glycolic Acid and Hyperpigmentation
Many age spots that appear on the face, chest and arms represent an accumulation of pigmented cells in the stratum corneum. Because these forms of keratosis share a thickened stratum corneum, Glycolic Acid, by softening the surface corneocytes and facilitating exfoliation, helps relieve some of the more superficial imperfections.
When Glycolic Acid and Hydroquinone products are used regularly, the thickened, dry stratum will gradually diminish along with the Hyperpigmentation. Remember, in addition to Glycolic Acid and Hydroquinone, individuals must use a broad spectrum sun block daily, such as Sun Protector, to prevent the condition from recurring. Back

Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is caused by damage to DNA- the cells’ directions for all functions including reproduction. The cells divide unevenly and rapidly; witch causes small tumors known as skin cancer.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma, the second most frequently diagnosed form of cancer, is primarily abused by repeated exposure to sunlight. Tumors usually appear on highly exposed areas such as the face, hands and shoulders. The tumors resemble red or pink solid bumps. Often appearing as open sores or ulcers that do not heal. This type of cancer will become crusty and bleed easily.

Melanoma
The least frequent but most deadly form of skin cancer is melanoma. Melanoma is characterized by dark, mole like lesions. Melanomas can be found on any part of the body but most appear on areas on which sun exposure has occurred repeatedly. Warning signs of melanoma include:

• A sudden change in the size of the mole or continuous growth
• Change in color
• Change in shape
• Change in elevation
• The surface of the mole becomes crusty, oozes or bleeds
• Mole becomes itchy or painful
Individuals at risk of melanoma include those with a family history of malignant melanoma, a fair complexion or a record of numerous sunburns or excessive sun exposure. Even if an individual has had as little as one severe sunburn before the age of 18, she or he is at a higher risk of developing Melanoma.
